Runner-Up Thomson Leads Wolverines to Fourth at Qubein Cup

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Paced by a runner-up finish from senior Hunter Thomson, the University of Michigan men’s golf team tallied an 872 54-hole team total Tuesday (Oct. 15) to finish fourth in its fall finale at the Qubein Cup at the Sedgefield Country Club.

With an even-par 210 (70-68-72) total, Thomson led the Wolverines for the fifth time in six fall events helping him his third top-five finish this season. With a team-best nine sub-par fall rounds, he has now recorded four 54-hole event totals at even or sub-par.

Behind Thomson was freshman Dean Muratore, who posted his second straight top-15 individual finish. With a 217 (73-69-75) total, he tied for 11th in the 84-golfer field. Slipping just outside the top 25, fellow freshman RJ Arone, who started all six events this fall, tied for 26th at 222 (74-72-76).

Michigan used Thomson’s first-round 70 (E), to open with a 291-team total in Monday’s opening 18 holes positioning the Wolverines third. Following with a 68 (-2) from Thomson and a 69 (-1) by Muratore, the Wolverines followed with a 282 to maintain the third position after 36 holes. Wrapping up with a 299, the Maize and Blue dropped one spot to fourth with an 872 total.

With its fourth-place finish, U-M has wrapped up its six-tournament fall schedule. The Wolverines shift their focus to the winter training break as they will not see event action until February.

The spring season will begin with a trip to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, from (Feb. 9-11) for Purdue’s Puerto Rico Classic — U-M’s first trip to the Boilermakers’ annual spring tournament in nine years (2016). The three-day, 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Grand Reserve Golf Club.
