Why does Jonathan Smith have a job today? It’s a simple question but a valid one that was asked by a local sports talk radio host on Monday morning.
Jim Costa of 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit took to social media platform X on Monday morning to express his opinion that Michigan State needs to fire Smith as their head football coach. In Costa’s post on social media, he pointed out that Smith has no signature wins, hasn’t developed an identity and simply are not competitive as three main reasons for why he should have been let go on Sunday following another double-digit defeat.
You can see Costa’s full post on X below:
Since taking over as the Spartans head coach in 2024, Smith holds a record of 8-12 overall and as Costa pointed out, 3-11 in Big Ten games. He is also 4-12 in games against power four competition, with only one of those coming against a team that either finished or will finish with a winning record.
Michigan State is 3-5 overall and in the midst of a five-game losing streak at the moment. This recent skid has many preparing for a move to be made and Smith to be let go at some point in the next few weeks. Michigan State and athletic director J Batt have not commented on Smith’s status, which also led to Costa’s questioning in this social media post.
The Spartans head to Minnesota this week as a narrow underdog. If Michigan State were to lose this week and make it six straight losses, I wouldn’t be surprised if a change is made by next Monday.
