Goff Agrees to $40 Million Decision as Lions Make Potential Maxx Crosby Room

The Detroit Lions have restructured the contract of their star quarterback, Jared Goff. This was along expected lines, as it now clears $32 million in cap space for the Lions.

According to NFL analyst Tom Pelissero, the Lions have added a void year to clear $32 million in cap space.

“The Lions restructured QB Jared Goff’s contract, converting $40 million of his base salary to a signing bonus and adding a void year to clear $32M in 2026 cap space.”

Jared Goff’s $55 million guaranteed salary was set to hit the salary cap massively. Now with the restructure, the Lions have converted $40 million into a signing bonus.

Goff’s guaranteed money remains the same, but the Lions can now spread the $40 million signing bonus over the next 5 years. The Lions may be looking at restructuring further deals to create more cap space.

Goff, a five-time Pro Bowler, was ranked fifth in the Most Valuable Player rating in 2024. In total, he has made 82 starts in five years since being acquired from the Los Angeles Rams. He also famously helped the Lions to a 15-2 record in the 2024 season.

With Goff’s contract being restructured, this is a clear signal that the Lions are willing to be more aggressive in free agency this year.

This could enable the Lions to go after star edge rusher Maxx Crosby, as he is available in the market again.

Maxx Crosby could be on the radar for the Lions once again

In a shocking twist, the Baltimore Ravens will not be going ahead with the trade for Maxx Crosby. The Ravens had promised two first-round draft picks in exchange for Crosby.

However, the Raiders announced that the Ravens have “backed out” on the trade, and analysts speculate whether Crosby’s physical exam was the reason for the Ravens’ backing out.

Crosby has undergone a meniscus repair, following which he is currently in recovery. Crosby’s surgeon, however, is confident that he is recovering well.

Speaking to ESPN, he said, “Maxx Crosby is doing very well in the early part of his rehab. He is certainly on track in his planned program, he feels very well, and is already much improved.”

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes has previously expressed interest in acquiring Crosby. Holmes had said that he was “willing to break the bank” to get Maxx Crosby to Ford Field.

With the recent steps the Lions are taking to free up cap space, it could very well mean that Crosby is in their sights.

Do you think the Lions will make a move on Maxx Crosby?
