Derek Bell came had a couple of chance opportunities to get in a race car in the late 1950’s, and found out his talent was obvious to other people as a natural race car driver. Having no money, racing programs for young people in England, or means, he happened to go to a one-day driving school and was singled out by a driving instructor after taking his laps in front of his driving school class. The instructor wanted to find out who this natural talent was, and proceeded to tell Bell in front of the school that he was a natural talent, and within a year, he could be in Formula 3 cars. For the answers to that question, you will have to see how this story comes out.
Steve McQueen and Enzo Ferrari
Did Bell have an immediate rags-to-riches story? Nope. Another chance encounter was needed. Bell tells that story, being part of the LeMans movie with Steve McQueen, and driving for Enzo Ferrari and his world championships in this 20 minute Zoomcast. Incredible career and movie highlights are a part of our conversation.
