BARK RIVER, Mich. — With four of its five tallies in the red, the University of Michigan men’s golf team pieced together a final round 279 (-9) today (Sunday, Sept. 2) for an 876 54-hole total to finish fifth in its season-opening Island Resort Intercollegiate at the Sage Run Golf Club.

Looking to defend its 2023 team title, the Wolverines got off to a slow start opening 297 in Sunday’s first round, despite freshman RJ Arone carding an even 72 in his first collegiate round. As senior Hunter Thomson followed his opening 74 with a 70 (-2) and Arone etching a second 72 (E), U-M improved with a 291 in the second round to position itself fifth (588) after day one

With nine of the 12 teams closing with a sub-par team tally, four Wolverines posted sub-par rounds led by Thomson and senior Yuqi Liu‘s 68s (-4) to help give the Maize and Blue a closing 277 (-11) — tying for the second-lowest team tally on the final day. Despite the rally, U-M’s 865 (+1) event total helped the Wolverines maintain their standing as they finished fifth.

For the 24th time in his career, Thomson paced the Wolverines as he recorded the 17th sub-par 54-hole total of his brilliant career. After his opening 74 (+2), he rallied with his 70 (-2) and 68 (-4) to crack the top-10 for the 16th time. In three overall events at Sage Run, Thomson has eight of nine rounds under par, averaging 69.7 per 18 holes.

Continuing his strong summer play, Arone shined in his collegiate debut posting a 215 (-1; 72-72-71) total and earning a tie for 15th. His finish is the best for a Wolverine in nearly 10 years. Former U-M All-American Kyle Mueller won the 2014 Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-7) in his collegiate debut.

Fifth-year senior Ben Hoagland‘s even par 216 (E; 73-73-70) helped place three Wolverines among the top 20 as he tied for 19th. Like Thomson, Hoagland has posted seven of nine rounds under par at the Island Resort, averaging 70.2 per round.

In the first of five September events, U-M will head to Toledo, Ohio, on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 9-10) for the Inverness Intercollegiate at the famed Inverness Club. The 54-hole event features a stellar 14-team field, including top-ranked defending national champion, Auburn.
