What coaches described as a tournament of attrition with golfers walking 36 holes on rolling terrain and swirling winds. Round three did not see a lot of movement as most teams stayed where they finished on Saturday.
Wright State University finishes with the win as Connor Lash’s team Steve Hollenbeck and Shane Ochs finish first and second in the medalist honors for the tournament. Katke-Cousins is a tough track and to have a combined team score at -2, Wright State has formidable competition with Oakland University. Nick Pumford’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams finished second The Golden Grizzlies put together a team effort of -3 and passed the third place team Butler midway through the round. Dr. Huffman’s crew went +11 on day three, good enough for third place.
The OU ‘B’ team finished tied for fourth with Bowling Green. The ‘B’ team was +13 and the Falcons played as a team to even par.
Individual Medalists
Wright State players Tommy Hollenbeck carded a final day round of 68 and his teammate Shane Ochs had a trampoline up and down round with four birdies, an eagle and five bogeys. OU’s Robert Burns finished the third round at 71, one under for the tournament.
Kevin Jennings of Central Michigan is the third year head coach of the Chippewas and CMU had no men’s team for 37 years. the team is still building their identity and working hard to get some of the midwest’s top golfing talent. ” A lot of maturity in their development and as individuals and players and academically. we keep doing the things that we are supposed to do.” Jennings is also proud of the teams cumulative GPA above 3.0
Jennings team will keep grinding during the fall season. They have an invitational this fall.
His takeaway after Saturday’s 36 hole round sums up playing a tough course. “Very challenging conditions. Very challenging venue. Its a chance to learn and grow and elevate what we are doing in our program. “
