Legendary former Red Wings forward Sergei Fedorov is rumored to be a potential replacement for Derek Lalonde if the team considers firing the head coach.

Sergei Fedorov is a player that needs little introduction. The Hall of Famer has more than 1100 career points across 1248 career games. He had 954 points in 908 career games with the Red Wings.

Now, with the team on the verge of collapse, could the legend of the game return to save the franchise? It is certainly an intriguing idea, one that Matt Murley shared on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast.

While the take garnered a lot of attention, most fans don’t think this is really going to happen. Many correctly pointed out that Fedorov is not exactly on good terms with the team.

Several fans suggested the team replace Lalonde with recently fired former Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery. Many have also pointed out that Yzerman’s moves have not helped out Lalonde much.

That being said, the fans do seem to agree that Lalonde should go. Red Wings fans in particular seem mostly united on the topic, a rare feat on the internet in 2024.

One fan went so far as to suggest they should blow the whole thing up.

Currently, the Red Wings are 7-9-2 for 16 points through 18 games. That puts them at the bottom of the Atlantic division and 26th overall in the league. They are running out of time to turn things around fast.

A common benchmark for predicting playoff teams comes by American Thanksgiving. The holiday is on the 28th this year, putting it just eight days away.

The team has four games between now and then giving them a max potential of 24 points and a 11-9-2 record. Even that might not be enough to be in a playoff spot.

As such, it seems likely that Lalonde could be gone soon. Be sure to keep an eye on the team as we may very well see our second coach fired this season.
