As he heads into the final year of his rookie contract, Amon-Ra St. Brown is going to be a very rich man very soon. Buzz during and after the NFL Combine set a bar just below the absolute top of the wide receiver market-$26-$28 million per year. Based on what he’s done in his first three seasons, he’s well worth that money.
It’s just a matter of when it gets done, and for whatever it’s worth head coach Dan Campbell reinforced the idea that an extension for St. Brown is among the team’s priorities this offseason. The faint idea of a holdout if he doesn’t have a new deal in place is not a thing, at least not yet of course. If we get to July and St. Brown doesn’t have a new contract, then there will some cause for concern as the start of training camp looms.
But we aren’t there yet, and the Lions’ current focus is surely on the draft in less than three weeks.
Bleacher Report writer predicts when Amon-Ra St. Brown contract extension will be done
Within the scope of wide receivers who are currently slated to be free agents in 2025, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report of course wrote about St. Brown.
“St. Brown has been a high-volume, reliable option in one of the league’s most productive offenses over the last two years. He set all new career highs last season with 119 receptions, 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns.”
“Both sides should be motivated to get something done quickly. St. Brown has financial ground to make up as a Day 3 pick and the Lions aren’t going to be able to replace his role easily if he gets away.”
Ballentine offered a prediction for the deal St. Brown will get, with a prediction for when it will be done.
Prediction: St. Brown signs a four-year, $115 million contract extension with the Lions before the draft
Four years, $115 million is $28.75 million per year (#math), which is in line with prior reports and projections-albeit on the high end. Getting a deal done with St. Brown before the draft has a little bit of “the sooner the better” vibe to it, but it also feels right and it just might happen.
