Women’s Golf: Medalist Chun Ties U-M Record, Leads Wolverines to Team Title at Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Anchored by a U-M record-tying 203 (-10) 54-hole tally from medalist Monet Chun, the 39th-ranked University of Michigan women’s golf team used an 855 (+3) team total to capture the team title at the Chattanooga Classic played at the Council Fire Golf Club.

In a record-breaking performance, Chun earned her third career individual title and the 39th all-time in program history. After an opening 74, she roared back with 11 birdies in the second round to set the U-M and Chattanooga Classic single-round records with a 61 (-10). The tally also tied the second lowest individual round in NCAA history.

Using a closing 68 (-3), Chun etched a 203 (-10) to win by two shots and equal U-M’s lowest 54-hole record and tied her former teammate Ashley Lau’s 203 (-7; 67-70-66) tallied at the 2022 Vystar Gators Invitational.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines’ team victory was the first of the season, sixth under U-M head coach Jan Dowling and 38th all-time. Opening with a 299, U-M positioned itself ninth in the 16 team field. Using Chun’s 61 (-10) as well as Sydney Sung‘s 66 (-5), the Wolverines followed with a program-record 271 (-13) second-round total to vault the Maize and Blue eight spots and into the 36-hole lead, tied with South Florida, with a 570 total.

In the final round, Chun added six of her tournament-best 21 total birdies, to card a 68 (-3), while freshman Sidney Yermish posted a 70 (-1) to help U-M close with a 285 (+1) and claim its first win in its regular-season finale with a six-shot victory and 855 total.

Overall, with Chun’s individual win, the Wolverines closed with three among the top 25 in the 88-golfer field. Lauren Sung used a 217 (73-72-72) total to post a career-best tie for 13th. Yermish’s closing 70 helped him tie for 21st with a 220 (73-77-70). Sydney Sung (79-66-81) and Mara Janess (79-72-75) rounded out the starting five scorers as they both tied for 43rd at 226. Making her spring debut, Grace Wang (74-76-76) also tied for 43rd as an individual.

With the regular season completed, the Wolverines will shift their focus to the postseason starting with the Big Ten Championships, Friday through Sunday, April 19-21. The three-day, 54-hole conference championships will be played at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace, Md.
