Michigan Women finish 16th

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — After weather altered the spring opening format from three days to two, the University of Michigan women’s golf team’s 303 final round today (Monday, Feb. 2) helped tally an 887-team 54-hole total and 16th finish in Purdue’s Puerto Rico Classic played at the Grand Reserve Golf Club.

Following a near three-month winter training period, the Wolverines used senior Mara Janess‘ fifth sub-par tally of 70 (-2) and fellow senior Sydney Sung‘s even-par 72 for a 291-team tally in Sunday’s first round. With incoming weather threatening the tournament, it was decided to make day one 36 holes, and the 18-team field headed back out for a second round.

With a trio of 73s (+1) from Janess, Sung and sophomore Thomasine Bartholdson, the Wolverines followed their first-round 291 with a 293, giving them a 584 36-hole total for the 16th spot.

Despite a small 30-minute rain shower in Monday’s final round, the field navigated the weather and was able to complete 54 holes. Freshman Reese Ng paced the Wolverines with her 74 (+2), while Janess closed with a 75. The Maize and Blue’s 303 total helped it stay 16th with an 887-event total.

Paced by her opening 70 (-2), Janess led the Wolverines for the third time in five events as her 218 (+2, 70-73-75) tied her for 44th, while Reese Ng’s career-low 54-hole total of 221 (73-74-74) helped her tie for 59th. Sung followed a shot behind, tying for 68th with her 222 (72-73-77). Freshman Jaymie Ng made her collegiate debut as an individual and tied for 73rd with a 223 (73-72-78).

The Wolverines next head to Sarasota, Fla., Sunday and Monday (Feb. 15-16) for Michigan State’s Spartan Suncoast Invitational, expected to be played at the Palm Aire Country Club.
