One of the best trades of all time remains to be Jared Goff‘s trade to the Detroit Lions, three years ago. It was a win for all four parties involved in the trade– Lions, Goff, Los Angeles Rams, and Matthew Stafford, whom the Lions traded in exchange for Goff.
Despite making a Super Bowl appearance with quarterback Goff, the Rams and head coach Sean McVay were inclined towards trading him as they wanted to upgrade their quarterback. And they got the best deal with the Lions when Stafford produced an instant upgrade to the team’s center. As the years pass by, the trade deal continues to be more right.
During an interview on the Trading Cards podcast, the 2016 first-round pick opened up about his trade to the Lions, saying it was truly the best thing that ever happened to him, professionally.
In hindsight, [it] was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, for my career and my development as a human. I’m fortunate enough to be around a lot of good coaches and players in Detroit that support me and help me reach my potential. Jared Goff said
The trade to the Lions also improved Goff’s game, as he logged 12,258 yards, 78 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, in just three seasons with the Lions. While in the five seasons, he spent with the Rams, he logged 18,171 yards, 107 touchdowns with 55 interceptions.
Anticipating a rewarding extension for the Lions’ star QB Jared Goff
This season, Goff is entering the final year of his contract with the Lions, making him eligible for an extension. Sources say the franchise is looking forward to rewarding their star quarterback in a lucrative deal ahead of the 2024 season.
As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported, the Lions are likely to offer an extension of $45-50 million annually to Goff. Given, that he broke their longest drought by bringing them their first divisional title since 1993.
He is coming off a strong season with the Lions’ dynamic offense by recording 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Moreover, he also led the team to the NFC championship game, before the Niners outperformed them.
