MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (7-6-1, 5-1-0 CCHA) earned a 5-3 road victory at St. Thomas (3-8-4, 2-5-3 CCHA) to secure the weekend sweep on Saturday.
Alexander Tell opened up the scoring for the Tommies at the 12:16 mark as both teams continued to test each other’s goaltenders, but in the final minute of the opening period, the Laker offense exploded for back-to-back goals from John Herrington (Hudson’s Hope, B.C.) and Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) to take the lead going into the intermission.
William Ahlrik (Tidaholm, Sweden) punched one through around the crease just over seven minute into the second period, and two minutes later, Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.) took the puck off of a block by Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) coast to coast to to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Tommies were able to spring to life in the third period with a pair of power play goals from Lucas Wahlin and Matthew Gleason to trim the lead to one, but Milburn once again iced the game away with an empty-netter in the closing seconds to help the Lakers hold on to first place in the CCHA by points percentage.
Milburn’s two goals on the night extend his weekend point total to 5 (3G, 2A).
The Lakers will now return home to take on the Bemidji State Beavers in Taffy Abel Arena with puck drop for game one scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:07 p.m.
