MIAMI – The all-Australian Ripper GC team held a preseason training camp in January on the Blue Monster at Trump National Doral. The weather was cold, misty and windy. The 10th fairway was inaccessible. The conditions were brutal – but the payoff came Sunday at LIV Golf Miami.

The Rippers won the battle of survival under the harshest scoring circumstances in league history, with popular veteran Marc Leishman claiming his first LIV Golf individual title after shooting the week’s only bogey-free round. His Rippers won the team title with a cumulative 4-over total, the first time any team has won with an over-par score.

“It kicked our butts when we were here in January for the training camp, and it did the same again this week,” Leishman said. “I guess it kicked our butt less than everyone else.”

Leishman conquered the Blue Monster on Sunday by posting the only bogey-free round by any player this week, a 5-under 67 to finish at 6 under, one stroke better than Stinger GC’s Charl Schwartzel. Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia was another stroke back in solo third.

It’s the 14th time in LIV Golf history that a team has swept both trophies. And it’s the first win of any kind in four years for the 41-year-old Leishman, who had three runner-up finishes and five other top 10s since joining LIV Golf with his captain Cameron Smith in the middle of the inaugural 2022 season.

“It’s been a long time coming for Leish,” Smith said. “He’s knocked on so many doors, and at times has felt probably unlucky. Even for me as a mate, I’ve felt like he’s been unlucky.”

But on a demanding course toughened by wind gusts and firm greens, Leishman produced a masterpiece of steady, patient play.

“It was pretty disgusting how I played there,” Leishman said of Singapore. “To come back on a golf course like this where there’s trouble around every single corner, I think playing so bad in Singapore helped me today just not letting my guard down at all.”

Leishman started Sunday three shots off the lead but quickly moved up the leaderboard with birdies in two of his first four holes. He shared the lead with Rd. 2 leader Bryson DeChambeau through eight holes, but the Crushers GC captain went bogey-double bogey around the turn to effectively end his chances.

Leishman’s final birdie of the day at the par-5 10th gave him a three-shot cushion and he nursed it with eight consecutive pars to end his round, never providing his challengers with an opening.

Even so, several players made a charge on the back nine.

Stingers GC’s Charl Schwartzel reeled off four straight birdies to climb into contention, while teammate Dean Burmester, the defending LIV Golf Miami champion, also made noise before a disastrous final two holes.

Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia, seeking his second win of the season, was 3-under during a 11-hole stretch. His birdie at the 17th after a brilliant approach shot moved him within a shot of Leishman’s lead.

Leishman, playing in the group ahead of Garcia, found the trees with his tee shot at the 18th and had to punch out. His third shot left him 13 feet above the pin, but he knocked in the clutch par putt to keep the lead. “I wanted this one pretty bad, especially having a two-shot lead teeing off 18,” Leishman said. “Probably the worst hole in the world to have – two shots is nothing on that hole.”

Garcia ultimately bogeyed the 18th, hitting his tee shot into the trees, then finding the water with his approach. “I had an opening there with a 3-iron, and then I just needed three or four more feet, and it would’ve been great,” Garcia said of his second shot.

Leishman was on the practice green, watching on the videoboard when he saw Garcia’s ball in the water. That’s when he knew the championship was his, a well-deserved victory on a course that wasn’t so friendly a few months earlier.

“I’ve played well in a lot of LIV events,” Leishman said. “I’ve had chances to win, haven’t won. You wonder if you’re going to win again … I doubted myself but that just made it all so much sweeter today.”Ripper GC won their first team title of the season at LIV Golf Miami. (Photo by Chris Trotman/LIV Golf)TEAM SCORES

ROUND 3 NOTES
UNLUCKY PHIL: HyFlyers GC Captain Phil Mickelson was just one shot off the lead through six holes Sunday. But then came arguably the unluckiest break in LIV Golf history.

Mickelson, playing his third shot, hit a chip that banged off the flagstick at the par-4 seventh, bounced onto the green and rolled into the water. The double bogey took the wind out of his sails, and he eventually finished in solo sixth at 1 under.

“It was unfortunate,” Mickelson said. “I don’t know what to say. Obviously, I hit the chip a little high on the flag, like it was going to be 12, 15 feet long, but certainly water wasn’t in play. … But I hit a lot of good shots later on. I was able to make a couple of birdies, get the round back to even par and finish off a good solid tournament.”

CAM’S FIRST TROPHY AS A DAD: Winning Ripper team captain Cameron Smith became a father with the birth of his son Remy last week.

“I miss him so much, actually,” Smith said. “It was hard to come away this week. I mean, I’ve had a few times where it’s been hard to get away from home. But it was a different level this week. I can’t wait to see him tonight. It’s cool; he’s the winning formula for the team.”

SCHWARTZEL FEELING GOOD: Stinger GC’s Charl Schwartzel finished in solo second, his best result since winning the inaugural LIV Golf tournament in 2022 in London. His final-round 6-under 66 matched Torque GC’s Carlos Ortiz for low round of the day and the week.

The South African posted four consecutive birdies on his back nine, bounced back from his only bogey of the day with another birdie, and then finished his round with one final birdie at the par-5 first that forced Marc Leishman to make a 13-foot par putt to avoid a playoff.

“Got on an amazing run,” Schwartzel said. “Just hit great shots. All of a sudden, I found myself in with a chance and Leish still having 18 to play. When I was going down 1, I saw him in the trees, I thought, if I birdie, I have a good chance of getting in a playoff. But he made a great par. I played with him yesterday and he was playing great golf. But I’m very happy with my own game now.”

ANOTHER TOP 10 FOR RAHM: Despite a quadruple-bogey 8 at the par-4 17th when two balls rolled into the water, Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm still managed a tie for ninth at 1 over. That keeps his streak alive of finishing inside the top 10 in every LIV Golf tournament that he’s completed (17 total).

FIREBALLS’ STREAK ENDS: Fireballs GC finished solo fifth with a collective score of 20 over, ending the team’s streak of three consecutive LIV Golf tournament wins. The Fireballs remain atop the season-long standings with 112 points.

IRON HEADS’ FIRST POINT: Iron Heads GC finished in solo eight to claim their first team point of the season. The Iron Heads entered LIV Golf Miami as the only team without a top-8 points finish. Danny Lee led the team with a tie for ninth, the team’s first individual top-10 finish this year.

AK’S BEST RESULT: Wild Card player Anthony Kim shot a final-round 5-under 67, one of just four rounds of 67 or better shot this week on the Blue Monster. It was an impressive bounce-back round after Kim shot 83 the previous day. Kim’s T29 finish is his best result since joining LIV Golf last season after a 12-plus year retirement.

NIEMANN REMAINS NO. 1: Torque GC Captain Joaquin Niemann finished outside the points with a tie for 33rd, but he remains atop the season-long Individual Championship standings. Fireballs GC Captain Sergio Garcia climbed into 2nd place with a solo third, while Rahm dropped to third. Leishman jumped 15 spots into 4th place in points.

LOW ROUNDS OF THE WEEK: Schwartzel and Carlos Ortiz shot 6-under 66s on Sunday, the low rounds of the week. Sunday’s field scoring average of 73.574 was the lowest of the three days. For the week, Trump National Doral played to a stroke average of 74.377 (2.377 over par).

21ST DIFFERENT WINNER: With his victory, Leishman becomes the 21st different player to win a LIV Golf individual title. The Rippers become the seventh different team with multiple players winning LIV events.
