YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team was topped by Miami University Saturday, Oct. 12, by a 38-14 score in front of 16,903 fans at Rynearson Stadium, as the game featured a halftime performance by the world-famous The Temptations.
How It Happened
Miami scored on the game’s opening play from scrimmage before Cole Snyder (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern/Rutgers/Buffalo) led EMU down the field before ultimately tying the game with a quarterback sneak on the Eagles’ ensuing drive.
Snyder led Eastern Michigan’s passing attack with 211 yards through the air. The signal caller also added 37 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Delbert Mimms III (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis/NC State) totaled 78 yards to lead the Eagles’ ground attack and added one touchdown in the game.
Miami led 21-7 before Eastern drew within one score on a Mimms one-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
Max Reese (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) reeled in a career-high seven catches for 50 yards.
Daniel Warnsman (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) recovered one fumble for the Eastern Michigan defense as Luke Murphy (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Washington) led the defense with a career-high 10 total tackles.
Eastern Michigan was 8-for-18 (44.4%) third-down attempts on the day.
Game Notes
» Mimms led the Eagles in terms of rushing with a total of 73 yards. The total is the second most for the running back this season, behind only his season-high of 145 yards in a win over Kent State, Sept. 28. Mimms III scored one touchdown on the ground, marking the fifth game in six this year he has scored a touchdown. He has scored one rushing touchdown in every game except at Washington (Sept. 7), when the Eagles were held out of the end zone. Mimms III now has six touchdowns on the year. Mimms III also forced a fumble while defending a punt return, marking the first forced fumble of his career. It was recovered by Warnsman, which was the first recovered fumble of his collegiate tenure.
» Snyder threw his first pick of the season. Prior to the interception, Snyder completed 16 passes in the game and had not thrown an interception in his previous 245 pass attempts. Additionally, the Eagles had not thrown an interception in their previous 168 attempts. The interception marked just the second Eagles’ turnover of the season (tying second fewest in the FBS), entering the game, Eastern ranked 13th in turnover margin per game with +1.0.
» Eastern rushed for 121 yards in the game. The Eagles have rushed for over 100 yards in five of their first six games this season. The last time they accomplished this feat came in the first six games of the 2022 season, when EMU rushed for 2212 yards on the season, its highest team total since 2018.
» Murphy led Eastern Michigan on defense notching a career-best 10 tackles in the loss against Miami. The 10 tackles are the most that Murphy has had in a single game this season, topping his previous best of eight set at Kent State, Sept. 28. It is the third time this season in which an Eastern Michigan player has recorded double digit tackles on the season.
» JB Mitchell(Alabaster, Ala./Thompson) made his return to the lineup and recorded his first stats of the season in the third quarter, as he hauled in a reception for 12 yards for a first down.
» Reese hauled in a career-best seven receptions. The junior is in the midst of a breakout season, as he has totaled 19 catches this season, which stands as a season-long career-high. Reese’s seven grabs on the day stands as the second-highest total from an individual receiver on the team, as Oran Singleton (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston/Akron/Hutchinson C.C.) and Terry Lockett (St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy/Michigan State) have each hauled-in eight in previous contests.
