MSU is hosting most of the Michigan based schools, Rutgers and a few others to round out the Mary Fossum Invitational. The scores are higher than normal and an evenly match field played through the elements in round 1. The individual leader of the tournament is Emily James of Rutgers at (-1) who had four birdies on D1 and a double on the par 3 12th and a bogey kept her close to par. Delaware if your team leader. Forest Akers wet conditions bumped scores to a player average to nearly 80 and no holes were played to under par. Two rounds are scheduled for Monday.
Michigan State’s women’s golf team shot a 13-over par 301 in the first round and is in second place among 15 teams after the first day of play at the Mary Fossum Invitational, being played at Forest Akers West on the MSU campus.
The 15-team field teed off on Sunday morning after 9 a.m. amidst rainstorms in the area and played nine holes before play was stopped for close to three hours. The teams returned to the course around 3 p.m. and completed the 18-hole first round. The field will play 18 holes on Monday, shortening the tournament to 36 holes.
Delaware, with two golfers in the top-five individually, shot a 10-over par 298 and is in first place, three shots ahead of the Spartans, who are in second place at 13-over par 301. Central Michigan is in third place (14-over par 302), with Rutgers in fourth (17-over par 305) and Youngstown State rounds out the top-five (18-over par 306).
The Spartans have three golfers among the top-10 overall, led by junior Grace Vetter, who shot a 1-over par 73 on Sunday and is tied for fourth place. She finished the day with two birdies and 13 pars.
Sophomore Sarisa Pojanalai is tied for seventh place at 2-over par 74, playing the back nine at 1-under par with a pair of birdies.
Senior Keeley Marx is tied for ninth place at 3-over par 75, with three birdies and nine birdies.
Closing out the team’s scoring lineup, senior Ana Sofia Murcia is tied for 34th place at 7-over par 79 and sophomore Lucia Valderrama is tied for 57th place at 10-over par 82.
Four members of the team are playing as individuals, with a pair sitting among the top-20 overall. Freshman Almendra Campoverde is tied for ninth place at 3-over par 75 and classmate Angelina Zhang shot a 5-over par 77 and is tied for 17th place. Junior Catalina Monroy shot a 7-over par 79 and is tied for 34th place and freshman Payton Haugen shot a 12-over par 84 and is tied for 71st place.
