BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Sophomore Dean Muratore became just the second University of Michigan men’s golfer to break the 200-stroke mark in a 54-hole event, capturing his first career medalist honor with a U-M record 196 (-14, 66-64-66) at the inaugural Jim DeLapa Collegiate Invitational on Monday (Sept. 29) at Point O’Woods Country Club.

Muratore’s blazing play powered Michigan to its third consecutive sub-par 54-hole total (835, -5) and third straight top-five finish, as the Wolverines placed fourth. Individually, he capped his record-breaking performance with 34 pars, 17 birdies and just three bogeys. He opened and closed with 66s (-4), surrounding a career-low 64 (-6) in the second round — a score that tied the second-lowest single round in U-M history.

Overall, Muratore’s total set a new U-M 54-hole record, surpassing former Wolverine great Kyle Mueller’s 198 (69-65-65) at the 2015 Alister MacKenzie Invitational. They remain the only Wolverines in program history to break 200 in a 54-hole event.

Behind Muratore, sophomore RJ Arone continued his strong start to the season with a third straight sub-par 54-hole total (208, -2; 69-67-72), tying for 10th and earning his third consecutive top-10 finish. Rounding out U-M’s starting five, sophomores Nilay Naik and Nicolas Simon carded totals of 215 (T-41st; 73-72-70) and 216 (T-47th; 76-69-71), respectively.

Competing as an individual for the second time this fall, sophomore Johnny Solis recorded his second straight top-25 finish, tying for 24th with a 211 (+1; 68-71-72).

With two fall tournaments remaining, the Wolverines start October heading to Lexington, Ky., on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6-7, for Kentucky’s Cullen Brown Collegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event is scheduled to be held at the Lexington Country Club. The last time U-M played an event in Lexington was 22 years ago at the 2003 Johnny Owens Invitational at the University Club.
