Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have done a masterful job building not only one of the NFL’s most competitive rosters but one of the deepest and most talented at key positions, as well.
Penai Sewell is one of the premier offensive tackles in the sport, at age 23, Amon-Ra St. Brown has emerged as a game-altering weapon at wide receiver, who enters the 2024 campaign at just 24, and game-wrecking edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson is also just 24. Meanwhile, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, tight end Sam LaPorta, and safety Brian Branch are entering their second seasons while making significant impacts as rookies.
It is little wonder then, that quarterback Jared Goff is experiencing the kind of renaissance that some league executives believe could make him an MVP candidate this fall.
Some even believe the Lions have the pieces in place to make a legitimate Super Bowl run.
NFL Executive Raves About Detroit Lions Roster
After advancing to the NFC Championship Game last season, there’s a belief inside the league that the Lions have what it takes to go at least one step further in 2024.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler, at least one NFL executive suggests the Lions have a better roster than the Houston Texans, who are also viewed as a Super Bowl darkhorse in the AFC, after making a run to the divisional round in 2023.
“[The Lions] are better up front on the offensive line, and I think their defensive line will be better now, too, because of [DJ] Reader,” an NFL personnel director said. “They probably need another edge rusher. With rookie corners you never know, but those guys [Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.] are talented. They are better in the middle of the field. And if Jameson Williams stays healthy, he will be a huge difference-maker for them.”
That an executive would take the Lions’ roster over the Texans speaks volumes to the breadth and depth that Holmes has built in Detroit, especially given C.J. Stroud’s emerge as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks en route to an Offensive Rookie of The Year win in 2023.
Whether that talent powers a championship run in Detroit remains to be seen.
