With ten golfers within seven shots of the lead of the Schwab Cup final, the leader Bernhard Langer does not have clear sailing to his first Schwab Cup victory. He has won the Schwab Cup 6 times in his illustrious career but never this final tournament. Langer’s 11 money titles also round out his portfolio.
Langer started out strong on Sunday. He put together a six under 30 on the front nine and opened a three shot lead. Langer had back to back bogeys to start the back and was temporarily tied with Green. His closing birdie on 18 was the difference as Langer won this tournament for his first win in this tournament. Langer is giddy. “It’s unbelievable, I can’t describe it. To win this big tournament after
what I’ve been through and to make it 17, maybe 18 years in a row out here because I won
when I only played five tournaments, it’s quite amazing. I’m very grateful, very blessed. Want
to thank the Lord for all that he’s done for me.” Langer has won for the 18th straight year on the PGA Tour Champions and has carded scores under his age 22 times including the Sunday finale.
Richard Green Finishes Second
Richard Green is still looking for his first PGA Tour Champions win. His back nine of five under temporarily put him in the lead before Langer made a birdie to earn the win. His 71-68-63-65 was a terrific score on the day. He talks about what happened on Sunday.
You’re still looking for that first win on the PGA TOUR Champions, in contention that second nine today and you put on a display. What was your approach? RICHARD GREEN: It was a little hard getting going early, but once I sort of got the momentum on my side a little bit sort of the back nine, it was just a matter of making the right decisions and playing my game as good as I possibly could and trying to execute the shots needed. We had a couple opportunities that I even felt let slip, but still really nice to finish the way I did.”
He Said It… Ernie Els on 2024
“I mean, I played good this week. I just — yesterday was a tough day to make
some putts. You know, but it was a good year. I didn’t think I played particularly as good as I
did the first half of the year in the second half. After July, after the British Open, I never really
regained that sharpness I had before I went to Europe.“
Steven Alker wins 2024 Charles Schwab Cup, the PGA Tour Champions season-long points race
Alker shot a final-round 5-under 66 to finish in a tie second place at the 2024 Charles Schwab Cup Championship, and that was enough to clinch the 2024 Charles Schwab Cup, the season-long points race on the PGA Tour Champions.
A day after shooting a 63 to tie for low round of the week, Alker carded six birdies under warm, sunny skies during the nicest day of the week at Phoenix Country Club. He battled most of the day with Richard Green for second, with Green hanging around with a shot at the season title as well. But a series of unfortunate events for Bernhard Langer on the back nine brought both men into contention for the tournament title and the points title.
