Detroit, Mich. — They say cream rises to the top, and PGA Tour and Golf No. 3 Cameron Young rose to the lead after tying the course record of 61. Young is in a three-way tie with Patrick Cantlay and X Fishburn. Cantlay tied the course record set by Peter Malnatit just one day earlier. Who missed cut at 2026 Rocket Classic?
The biggest name to miss the cut Friday is World No. 7 Chris Gotterup, who shot a 3-over 73 in the second round to finish at 1-over for the tournament. World No. 9 Wyndham Clark had a rough first round (1 over) and an even rougher second round (4-over) to mark the second top-10 player who won’t be playing in the third round in Detroit.Need a news break? Several other notable names won’t be playing the rest of the weekend, either.
Those include ex-champions Aldrich Potgieter (2025’s winner) and Davis (champ in 2021 and 2024), who both finished at 3-over. Local golfers Joe Hooks (Wayne State) and Patrick Wilkes-Krier (Ann Arbor) finished at 8-over and 7-over, respectively, while social media star Brad Dalke brought up the rear at 16-over – though he did shoot much better on Friday: just 5-over for the round.
Your Moving Day leader is…
Davis Riley. has gotten better each day. He has carded rounds of 68-64-63-195. Consistency and brilliance are the keys. Three under on the front and four under on the back. If he holds on, his name could be the answer to the trivia question “Who was the last winner of the Rocket Classic?”
Early Risers
Rasmus Hojaard tied the course record and three PGA players have equalled this on three consecutive days. Hojaard was three under to start his day, but nine birdies, including five on the back nine gave him a two-stroke lead before most of the leaders got to the golf course. Hojaard can now scoreboard watch and see what the leaders do when the expected afternoon rain comes in.
Michael Brennan goes on a front nine bender
Brennan was two shots behind Cam Young and in a tie for third entering the third round. A five-under par 30. Brennan added two more back nine birdies but a pesky bogey on the 18th lands him a total of 64. He is in solo second place.
Xander Schauffele
Xander started the day only two strokes behind the leaders and his birdies on a par 3-4-5 on holes four through six gave him optimism. A bogey on the eighth sent him into a seven-way tie for 7th. Schauffele was three under on the front with two more birdies and an 18th hole bogey. Xander is only three shots behind Davis Riley.
Cam Young not moving on Moving Day
Young started the day as the tournament leader at ten under. He carded a two under on Saturday and has a 69-61-68- 199 at the Rocket Classic. Young could not get the putter going and sputtered. Only one birdie on the back where tweeters are a dime a dozen.
Peter Malnati slides back on self-described ‘easy course’
Malnati said after his first round that the DGC was easy and carded a nine-under 61. A one-over 71 pushed Malnati down the leaderboard and he tumbled 54 spots. His 61-71-74 shows he had one good round. Five bogey’s and a birdie including a +3 38 on the back and Malnati is T-60.
Patrick Cantley is earning pars and that is bad
Pars are a great score at majors and most signature events. Not at the Rocket Classic. One birdie balanced by a bogey leaves Cantley at ten under. This is good for a logjam at -10. Cantley has a 64-67-70 and T-11. Cantley is only four back of the leader.
Bottom Line
22 players are within six strokes of the lead and a birdie barrage will be needed to take home the Rocket Championship trophy and the prize of nearly 2 million.
