MEMPHIS, TN — Scottie Scheffler tied the TPC Southwind course record Friday, Aug. 14, with a scintillating second-round 9-under 61 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
In doing so, the No. 1 golfer in the world rocketed to the top of the leaderboard in Memphis, sitting at 11 under after two days to grab a three-stroke lead over Sungjae Im.
Scheffler’s masterful round started with five straight birdies and 11 overall. It also included a pair of bogeys (one on the front nine and one on the back).
The 30-year-old Texan shot out of the gate on fire, ripping off a string of five consecutive birdies. He also birdied six of his first seven holes and seven of the first 10. After making par on No. 11, and bogey on the 12th (after finding the water off the tee), he settled back into a groove, making birdies on three of the last four holes. His birdie putt on 18 came up just eight inches short.

“I wouldn’t say golf’s ever easy,” Scheffler chuckled. “I did some good things out there. I hit some iron shots in there close and was able to hole a few putts as well.”
And as for that five-straight birdie start?
“I think that’s always the plan to get off to a good start. I got a good read on the first, knocked that one in. My swing has felt really good the past couple weeks, especially playing at home,” he said. “It was nice to get out there and get things rolling early in the round and was able to keep the momentum going and shoot myself a nice round today.”
Scheffler’s 61 is the fifth time a professional golfer has hit that mark since the course opened in 1989. Justin Rose accomplished the feat in 2023. Tom Lewis did it in 2020, while Bob Estes did it in 2001. Jay Delsing was the first to card a 61 at TPC Southwind, doing so in 1993 (when it was a par 71 course).
It’s also the 17th score of 61 or better on the PGA Tour in 2026.
