Red Wings goalie prospect and Michigan State goaltender Trey Augustine made Team USA at the 2024 Men’s World Championship. Dylan Larkin did not join the final roster due to injury.

The Red Wings goalie prospect selected in the second round of last year’s draft will play for Team USA at the 2024 IIHF Men’s World Championship. USA Hockey added him to the roster Sunday morning.

Augustine is joined by two current Red Wings in defenseman Jeff Petry and goaltender Alex Lyon. Detroit coach Derek Lalonde and goalie coach Alex Westlund are also on staff. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was named to a preliminary roster, but he did not join the final roster. The USA Hockey newsbreak announcing Augustine’s addition said he was “unable to compete due to injury.”

This season has been nothing short of stellar for Augustine. He led Team USA to golf at the World Junior Championship in January, then won Big Ten regular season and tournament championships for Michigan State as a freshman. Now, he has a chance to add even more hardware on an American team that is as talented as it has ever been in recent memory.

For Augustine to make this roster is a bit of a surprise considering his youth and experience. He hasn’t played against NHLers, and the rise in competition for him will be steep. However, Augustine is no stranger to making early leaps. When he was still in junior with the U.S. National Team Development Program, he made Team USA’s World Junior team and won the starting job, something usually more common for college and major junior players. Before that, he played a year up at the NTDP with the U18 squad instead of the U17s of his birth year.

Team USA will begin play at Men’s Worlds on Tuesday against Slovakia. The tournament is held in Ostrava and Prague, Czechia.
