Lions Reassert Themselves as Legitimate Super Bowl Contenders

On Monday night under the bright lights, the Detroit Lions delivered the kind of performance that turns heads across the NFL.
Two weeks removed from their lackluster performance against Green Bay in the season opener, Dan Campbell’s squad marched into Baltimore and left with a statement victory, outmuscling Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, 38–30.
With the win, Detroit reasserted itself as a legitimate Super Bowl contender early in the 2025 season.

The Ravens came in boasting one of the league’s most dynamic rosters, led by Jackson, the two-time MVP who has historically thrived against defenses vulnerable to mobile quarterbacks (i.e. the Lions).
He was efficient as a passer, completing 21-of-27 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns. However, the Lions accomplished what few teams have managed in Jackson’s career – they kept him in check as a runner and sacked him seven times.
In fact, it was the first time since 2019 that Jackson had been brought down five or more times in a single contest.
Detroit’s defensive front, anchored by Pro Bowl EDGE Aidan Hutchinson, won the line-of-scrimmage battle.
Hutchinson himself delivered the game’s biggest defensive moment in the fourth quarter, stripping Derrick Henry in Baltimore territory. The ball was scooped up by cornerback D.J. Reed, and a few plays later Jake Bates drilled a 45-yard field goal to extend Detroit’s lead.
“Our hardest workers are our best players,” Campbell said in reference to Hutchinson’s forced fumble. “It’s not lip service, it’s not fake: Our best players are our hardest workers. Go out and watch them practice, and it’s like that every day. And so, that’s the standard, that’s the standard. So, if you’re not up to that standard, with the effort matching what our best players do, then you’re not going to be around here very long.”
Detroit’s offense also continued to thrive Monday night.
Offensive coordinator John Morton leaned on creativity and balance as part of his gameplan, dialing up a flea-flicker, an option play between a receiver and a back and a power running game that bulldozed through Baltimore’s front seven.
Detroit finished with over 200 yards on the ground, highlighted by a monstrous performance from David Montgomery.
Montgomery led the way with a game-high 151 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries, including the game-sealing 31-yard score with under two minutes to play.
Meanwhile, Montgomery’s backfield counterpart, Jahmyr Gibbs, contributed another 67 yards and a pair of scores himself in the triumph for Detroit on Monday night.
The defining moment of the night, though, came through the air.
On fourth-and-2 with 1:56 to play and Detroit leading, 31-24, the ever aggressive Campbell kept the offense on the field and dialed up a pass play in which Amon-Ra St. Brown beat his defender, Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey, for a pivotal first-down conversion. It took a perfect toss from Goff, and the veteran quarterback delivered, coming through with the biggest throw of the night.
The completion set up Montgomery’s clinching score.
“I’ve got a tremendous amount of trust in those guys, and that’s been built up now on five years,” Campbell said in reference to the fourth-down play executed by Goff and St. Brown. “And that offensive line, the way they were playing, we just felt like that was the right call. And man, it’s those guys, it’s the players, man. They’re the ones who make this stuff come to light. And they’ve earned that trust.
“And once again, man, they step up and make huge plays at critical times. And it’s unbelievable, it really is. It’s a thing of beauty.”
For Goff, it was another efficient outing in a hot stretch that has seen the Lions rack up over 900 total yards and 90 points the past two games.
It marks just the second time since 1950 that Detroit has produced 900-plus net yards and north of 90 points over any two-game span.

The Lions signal-caller finished 20-of-28 for 202 yards and a touchdown, distributing the ball to seven different receivers and once again leaning on St. Brown, who secured seven receptions for 77 yards and a score.
The win carried extra weight considering the opponent.
The Ravens, which possess serious Super Bowl aspirations, served as a litmus test for where Detroit truly stands among the NFL’s very best teams.
A dominant performance on both sides of the ball, highlighted by near-perfect execution in high-pressure moments, proved that the Lions are not merely NFC North title contenders. Instead, they have the makings of a team capable of making a deep postseason run.
No offense to the Chicago Bears, but this Week 3 victory over Baltimore was the most gratifying win of the young season for the Lions. And it provided evidence that Campbell’s brand of aggressive, physical football can withstand the league’s toughest environments.
As the Lions walked off the field at M&T Bank Stadium, they did so with a renewed sense of confidence.
Hutchinson and the defense proved they could curtail the production of an electric dual-threat quarterback. Montgomery and Gibbs reminded the league just how dominant of a backfield duo they can be. And Goff, as steady as they come under center, displayed the veteran poise that has come to define his time in the Motor City.
Through three weeks, the Lions have experienced both the sting of a humbling defeat and the pure joy of a statement win.
If Monday night is any indication, Campbell’s squad is equipped with the necessary moxie and talent to not only compete with, but also beat the NFL’s elite teams.
Undeniably, Detroit – with its ultra convincing effort against Baltimore – has re-inserted itself into the conversation of the league’s very best teams.

Over the next two weeks, the Minnesota Vikings will be leaving for a two-week road trip to Europe for two games in two separate countries against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland, and the Cleveland Browns in London, England. Before the Vikings head out to Europe, they are working to sure up the back end of the roster to make things as smooth as possible, as it’s marketably harder to make additions because of the travel. They made five moves ahead of their trip. Vikings make 5 roster moves ahead of Europe trip The most notable one is the addition of wide receiver Jordan Addison to the active roster. He is now done serving a three-game suspension for his driving under the influence arrest from July 2024. His addition will be a massive one to the offense, especially with Jalen Nailor playing as well as he is. Quarterback Carson Wentz is going to have arguably the best group of weapons to throw to with a healthy Christian Darrisaw. They needed to make room for Addison, which is why the Vikings released Tim Jones. He will likely be added to the practice squad going into the overseas trip, as the Vikings don’t need him as that special teams ace with the emergence of rookie third-round pick Tai Felton as a punt gunner. The other moves involving the practice squad are interesting. Lucky Jackson was a fan favorite who looked to be emerging as a viable WR4 for the Vikings. Ultimately, a string of drops fell him out of favor, and it was one of the main reasons why they traded for Adam Thielen. He was a solid player for the Vikings over the three years he was with the team, but he’s already 28 years old and it was arguably time to move on. Valladay earned a roster spot after playing in the final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. With the injury to Aaron Jones, having depth at the position is really important. It’s also why the Vikings signed another back in Corey Kiner. He spent the preseason with the San Francisco 49ers after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. He rushed for 2,562 yards in his college career across both Cincinnati and LSU. He joins Cam Akers on the practice squad, leaving the Vikings four running backs on the practice squad and active roster. What are Russell Wilson’s options after Giants QB’s latest benching?
The New York Giants have seen enough from Russell Wilson after just three games, and the veteran quarterback is now left with a decision. Giants head coach Brian Daboll reportedly informed the team on Tuesday that rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart will start in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers. That means Wilson is headed to the bench, and the 36-year-old’s options will be limited going forward. Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5M contract with the Giants in March that is fully guaranteed. New York was the only team willing to offer him a clear path to a starting job, though Wilson was not able to hang onto it for very long. So where does Wilson go from here? Let’s take a look. Accept a job as the No. 2 quarterback with the Giants The most likely outcome for Wilson is that he will remain with the Giants as a backup. Daboll reportedly views him as the No. 2 quarterback behind Dart, at least for Week 4. That means Wilson is still an injury away from being thrust back into action. The Giants could also turn back to Wilson at some point if Dart does not appear to be ready. Wilson is still getting paid decent money, even if he will now be holding a clipboard. He has now been benched by the Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos since the Seattle Seahawks moved on from him following the 2021 season. Those situations had to have been difficult for Wilson, but all indications are that he remained a good teammate. He may do the same in New York and ride out the season. Ask to be traded or released Several teams are dealing with injuries to their starting quarterbacks. Joe Burrow is expected to miss at least three months with a toe injury. The Cincinnati Bengals reportedly did not explore the veteran QB market after Burrow went down, but that was before their Week 3 blowout loss and before Wilson was benched. Bengals backup QB Jake Browning has thrown five interceptions since taking over for Burrow in Week 2. He completed just 19 of 27 passes for 140 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday’s 48-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Even with the poor performance, however, the Bengals may not view Wilson as much of an upgrade. Other starting quarterbacks who missed Week 3 with injuries include Brock Purdy, Jayden Daniels, J.J. McCarthy and Justin Fields. If any of their respective teams were to show interest in Wilson, the 10-time Pro Bowl selection could ask the Giants to trade or cut him. Retirement Wilson has had a difficult time convincing teams that he is still worthy of being a starter since he left Denver two seasons ago. His play with the Steelers and Giants did nothing to prove that he is capable of playing at a high level and leading a team on a deep postseason run. If Wilson believes New York is done with him and there is no interest in him around the league, he may simply decide it is time to call it a career. It is unlikely that he would walk away from the remainder of his salary, but it would hardly be a surprise if 2025 winds up being his last NFL season.

Russell Wilson Benching Tanks Steelers Draft Plans
PITTSBURGH — Maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers were right to part ways with former quarterback Russell Wilson after all? The way that some around the NFL spoke about the former Steelers starter in his first few games with the New York Giants, you’d think that they let go of Patrick Mahomes. After three weeks, however, the veteran quarterback is already out as the number one QB in New York. It’s a tough blow for Wilson, but it’s also a tough blow for the Steelers’ 2026 NFL Draft hopes. The Steelers stood to gain from their multiple free agents lost this past offseason. Because of the contracts they signed with their new teams, the Steelers had the chance to collect multiple additional compensatory draft picks for next year’s draft, set to take place in Pittsburgh. That included a projected third-round pick that will likely drop to a fifth-round pick awarded to the Steelers due to Wilson joining the Giants. Not so fast, Steelers general manager Omar Khan. Wilson seemingly had one more parting gift for Pittsburgh, as he tanked the team’s plans of gaining another comp pick. The Giants made the highly-anticipated move of benching Russ after just three games in favor of recent first-round pick Jaxson Dart. The Ole Miss product is now taking over for Wilson and expected to lead the Giants back into contention in the NFC East. It’s an unsurprising move for New York, as Wilson and the offense struggled heavily through three weeks. Aside from a strong Week 2 performance against the Dallas Cowboys, a team that’s been their own level of gigantic disappointment, the Giants offense has looked junior varsity. In Week 1, he completed just 18 of 32 passes for 160 yards, two interceptions and zero touchdowns. This most recent loss, Russ went 17 for 37 and failed to throw a touchdown once again. Instead, he lost a fumble and had a questionable dump off pass in a crucial moment. These two were the proverbial nail in the coffin for Wilson’s starting tenure, and it also cemented the hopes for the Steelers. Prior to the benching, the Steelers were projected to receive four compensatory draft picks according to Over The Cap’s comp pick formula. In addition to the fifth from Wilson, they are projected to receive additional third, fourth and sixth-round picks thanks to the free agent departures of Justin Fields to the New York Jets, offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. to the Tennessee Titans, and Done Jackson signing with the Los Angeles Chargers.
