How an ‘alpha communicator’ became the Detroit Lions’ security blanket at safety

ALLEN PARK – The Detroit Lions coaching staff has joked in recent weeks about whether Chuck Clark can smile or not. And the verdict is out on that. But one thing many within the organization are smiling about is the security he provides them at safety.

Starting safeties Kerby Joseph (knee) and Brian Branch (Achilles) are recovering from their respective injuries from the previous year, ones that could affect their availability for the 2026 season. Needing to bolster their depth at the position, the Lions added Clark on a one-year deal, who comes to Detroit as a 10-year veteran at safety with 80 starts in 103 games under his belt.

When speaking about Clark and Christian Izien – whom the Lions also added this offseason – safeties coach Jim O’Neil shared that both players are great additions that fit the team from a culture standpoint. But when speaking specifically on Clark, O’Neil praised the “chip on his shoulder” the veteran safety carries and his ability to identify what opposing offenses are doing before the snap.

“This time last year, he was sitting on his couch, right? And now he’s here, running with the first group,” O’Neil said. “So that’s one, right? And every rep to him is meaningful. He appreciates being here. I think he is stone-cold serious about football. And he takes notes like he’s a rookie. But how he can anticipate out on the grass and how quickly he can process and make guys around him better is a quality that’s hard to evaluate unless you have them actually in the building. That’s really hard to evaluate in a draft; that’s really hard to evaluate in free agency, because you’re not experiencing that firsthand.”

O’Neil added, “There’s not a lot of what I call alpha communicators in the back seven. He’s one of them. He can run the whole show. He can run it all back there. So I’ve been really, really impressed with him…I think he’ll really, really help us as the season goes on.”

Through organized team activities and veteran minicamp, the Lions spent most of the spring identifying the best fit for Clark – playing down closer to the line of scrimmage (strong safety) or up high, deep in coverage (free safety).

O’Neil shared that as they get closer to game planning, Clark and Izien’s alignment will largely depend on who they’re sharing the field with — playing down in the box more if paired with Branch, or up high in coverage more if paired with Joseph.

Because of that, both players getting that experience at both safety positions is vital for the Lions. It’s worth noting, however, that Clark has taken all the starter reps in spring and summer and has instantly become a vocal leader on the defense.

Along with picking off Jared Goff during situational work during the first day of veteran minicamp, Clark has led by example; an important characteristic Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard highlighted.

“When Chuck’s on the field, you know where the safety is, you know what the check is, you know what the communication is. And that’s vital and important,” Sheppard said. “You talk about explosive plays, well, that’s the No. 1 component to limiting those, making sure we’re all on the same page. And that’s something – take ability aside, Chuck Clark on the field, there’s rarely to never a mistake or a (mental error) with the back end. And that’s because everybody knows who’s in charge because he makes it known.”

When the Lions kick off training camp in late July, figuring out the best place for Clark will be high on the agenda. As for whether he smiles or not, O’Neil said he caught the veteran defender flash one after his interception of Goff. Other than that, it’s been all business.

“He knows he’s fighting for his NFL life,” O’Neil said. “And he, with some other guys in that room, they’re fighting every day for their NFL life. And it’s highly competitive. We should get the best out of all of them, the best version of themselves.”
