ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s golf team closes its five-tournament September slate heading to Nashport, Ohio, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 28-29) as the Wolverines look to defend their team and individual titles from a year ago at the Virtues Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Virtues Golf Club and will be set up for a par 72 and 7,243 yards.
Notes
• The Virtues Intercollegiate will be made up of 14 teams, including: Belmont, Bowling Green (host), Butler, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, James Madison, Longwood, Marshall, Michigan, Ohio, Robert Morris, St. Bonaventure, Wright State, Youngstown State. Kent State, Ohio and Notre Dame will be sending individuals to the event.
• With two days of play scheduled (36-18), Saturday’s play opens with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. After re-shuffling teams by score, Sunday’s final round is also scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
• U-M will travel five starters and three individuals to the Virtues Golf Club. Seniors Hunter Thomson and Yuqi Liu combine with freshmen RJ Arone and Dean Muratore and fifth-year senior Jack O’Donnell as the Maize and Blue’s starting five. Fifth-year senior Ben Hoagland, redshirt-freshman Caden Pinckes and freshman Johnny Solis will compete as individuals.
• With three straight team tallies at minus-10 or better, Michigan used a season-low 830 (-34) total to post a 23-shot victory and earn its second team title of the 2023 Virtues Intercollegiate. U-M’s 830 (-34) total marked the second lowest 54-hole team total in program history. It trailed U-M’s record of 824 (-28) recorded at the 2014 MacKenzie.
• With 207 (-9) tallies by Hoagland and Liu, they joined Ohio’s Will Kates as tri-medalists in 2023. It marked the first individual titles for Hoagland and Liu. Overall, U-M finished with four Wolverines among the top eight after Thomson tied for fourth (208, -8) and former Wolverine Will Anderson was eighth (209, -7).
• Thomson continues to pace the Wolverines with his 70.25 scoring average. He had fired six of his 12 rounds under par with a season-best 66 (-6) in back-to-back rounds in his win at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 16-17). He has led U-M in all four events this season, extending his streak to the last seven. Overall, he had led the Wolverines in 27 of his 40 career events.
• With a 202 (-14) total, Thomson led from start to finish and earned his second career medalist honor while guiding U-M to a season best runner-up finish at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational. In addition to his second career win, the victory earned Thomson an exemption to play in the 2025 RBC Canadian Open (June 3-5) at the TPC of Toronto.

De Bock Wins, Team posts Historic Round at Red Sky
Sophomore captured her first collegiate crown as three school records fell
WOLCOTT, Colo. (EMUEagles.com) – Several records were broken, both individually and as a team, as the Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team completed the three-day Golfweek Red Sky Classic in Wolcott, Colo., Wednesday, Sept. 25, by placing 12th overall as team and sophomore Savannah de Bock winning the individual title. The Eagles, playing on the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Ranch and Golf Club, fired a school-record 285 on the final day to move up to 12th while de Bock used a record 65 in the second round to set herself up for the win at 12-under 204, claiming medalist honors by three strokes.
“First of all, congratulations to Savannah on her win,” Head Coach Josh Brewer said. “She showed this week why she is considered one of the best players in the world. It has been amazing watching her grow since she has come to college, and she deserves this win for all the hard work she has put in.
“I am also extremely happy for the team,” Brewer continued. “We have challenged them every day on the golf course and in life. It is so amazing to see their hard work and belief in our program be rewarded with a school record. We will enjoy this record; however, it will make us work harder as we want to set a new record very soon.”
How It Happened
As a team, Eastern shot 302 in the opening round to sit 15th overall before sliding down to 16th after shooting 306 in round two. But the Eagles came together as a team and shot a final round 285 – the fourth-lowest of the day – to move up to 12th place, the team’s best finish in two tournaments in 2024. On a historical level, the 893 total score ranks as the eighth-lowest in program history and just the 17th time the program has fired 899 or lower.
Individually, de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d’enghien, Belgium/Institut de l’Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) stole the show as she carded a school-record 204 (70-65-69) to finish at 12-under to win the title by three strokes. Not only did she break the record for a three-round tournament score, but she also carded a school-record 65 in round two, bettering the previous mark of 66 by Kelsey Murphy in 2015. Three other Eagles competed in the event, including Mariana Vega (Barranquilla, Columbia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish), who was tied for 40th at 6-over, 222 (75-76-71), with her third-round score marking her first sub-par round as a collegian. Julianna Go (San Juan, Philippines/St. Jude Catholic School/King) was tied for 71st at 16-over, 232 (78-84-70), as she shot two-under on the final day, while Riley Kim (Aldie, Va./Lightridge) was 77th at 19-over, 235 (79-81-75).
