Bowling Green earns first conference win in Dennis Green era

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – TThe Bowling Green Falcons (4-3-0, 1-0-0 CCHA) defeated the Ferris State Bulldogs (2-5-2, 1-2-0) with a 2-0 victory. BGSU starts the CCHA league play with a win for the first time since the 2022-23 season. Sophomore Cole Moore recorded his first shutout of the season and the second of his BG career. With tonight’s win, the Falcons have their first conference win and first home win under head coach Dennis Williams. 

Huskies shutout NMU in CCHA opener in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team began CCHA play with a 3-0 shutout of rival Northern Michigan Friday at the Berry Events Center. Derek Mullahy made 24 saves to earn the victory in net.



“We played a good complete game tonight,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “We got contributions from everybody that dressed. We challenged some players and they answered the bells. Derek made some big saves early until we got the offense going.”

Tom Leppa opened scoring 12:12 into the game when he flipped in a rebound from right in front of the net for his first NCAA goal. Rylan Brown took a shot from the point that bounced off the back wall. Trevor Kukkonen got a piece of it before Leppa put it home. It was the first NCAA points for Kukkonen and Brown.

Tech (3-2, 1-0 CCHA) scored a pair of power play goals in the second period. Matthew Campbell setup Stiven Sardarian for a redirect in front of the net for a 2-0 lead 3:24 into the second. It was Sardarian’s third of the season and 12th of his career.

Max Koskipirtti found some time and space and was able to pick his spot and fire the puck under the goalie’s blocker at 6:04 of the second. It was Koskipirtti’s second of the season and sixth of his career from Elias Jansson and Isaac Gordon.

The Huskies dominated the second, outshooting NMU 17-5. The Wildcats pushed in the third and pulled the goaltender with 2:55 left. They also got a late power play but Mullahy only had to make one save down the stretch and earned his first win as a Husky and second career shutout.

Mullahy stopped nine shots in the first, five in the second, and 10 in the third. Ryan Ouellette made 38 saves as the Huskies outshot the Wildcats 41-24. Tech was 2-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

No. 15 Buckeyes Topple Lake Superior State, 9-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight Buckeyes found the back of the net and in all 16 picked up a point, as the No. 15-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated Lake Superior State 9-3 in the series opener between the teams Friday in Value City Arena. Ohio State led 4-0 after the first period and 4-2 after the second. The Lakers cut the Buckeye lead to one early in the third, but the Buckeyes answered with five straight goals – including three in a 1:39 span – to pull away for the victory.

Sam Deckhut led Ohio State with two goals and added an assist for three points, while Nathan Lewis had a goal and two helpers for a three-point outing. Gunnarwolfe FontaineJames Hong and Joe Dunlap each had a goal and an assist and Riley Thompson and Damien Carfagna posted two assists each.

Ohio State is now 6-0-1 on the year, with the Lakers 1-4-0.

How it Happened

  • Ohio State led 3-0 before the game was six minutes old.
  • Just 23 seconds into the contest Gunnarwolfe Fontaine put the Buckeyes on the board, set up by Riley Thompson and Damien Carfagna.
  • James Hong tallied at 4:23, putting in the rebound of a Joe Dunlap shot with Max Montes also assisting, and 1:10 later Dunlap added a goal of his own, assisted by Carfagna.
  • Caden Brown’s sharp angle shot went off the goalie and in at 15:12 for a 4-0 Ohio State lead. Noah Powell and Chris Able assisted on Brown’s tally.
  • Ohio State outshot Lake Superior State 18-4 in the first period and 12-6 in the second.
  • The only goals in the second were scored by Lake Superior State, as the Lakers tallied at 6:30 and at 17:49 on the power play.
  • Just 24 seconds into the third period the Lakers made it a one-goal game (4-3) on a Sasha Teleguine goal.
  • Ohio State was quick to respond and put the game out of reach, tallying three times in a 1:39 span.
  • Nathan Lewis tallied 58 seconds after the Laker goal, Montes scored on the rush at 2:41 and Davis Burnside tallied 20 seconds after that. Jake Dunlap and Sam Deckhut had the helpers on the Lewis goal, Ryan Gordon and Nathan McBrayer set up Montes’ tally and Fontaine and Thompson notched the assists on the Burnside score.
  • Deckhut had the final two goals of the game, scoring at 5:49 off assists from Lewis and Brent Johnson, and converting a backhand at 15:04, with Lewis and Hong picking up the assists.
  • The Buckeyes outshot the Lakers 19-7 in the third and ended the game ahead, 49-17.
  • Buckeye goalie Logan Terness played all 60 minutes and had 14 saves. LSSU starter Rorke Applebee played 45:33, coming out after the third Buckeye goal of the first but returning to start the second, and made 31 saves, allowing eight goals. Grant Riley had nine saves on 10 shots in 14:27. LSSU blocked 15 Ohio State shot attempts.
  • The Buckeyes were unable to score on six power play chances and the penalty kill was 2-for-3.
