MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Led by a pair of top-25 Wolverine individual finishes, the University of Michigan men’s golf team posted an 870 54-hole total Tuesday (March 17) to finish ninth at the Michael A. Marino Classic at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.

With weather threatening the second round, the 16-team field opened the Marino Classic with 27 holes on Sunday (March 15). Michigan used a 287 (-1) — paced by a 67 (-5) from sophomore RJ Arone — to sit fourth after 18 holes; however, it slipped to ninth after completing the additional nine. Returning Monday morning, the Wolverines closed out the second round at 290, led by a 70 (-2) from sophomore Nilay Naik, and remained in ninth place with a 577 total.

With a pair of even-par 72s from Arone and redshirt-sophomore Jason Gordon in the final round, the Maize and Blue etched a 293 total to finish with an 870 total and a ninth-place finish.

With a 213 (-3) total, Arone led the Wolverines, tying for 14th and recording his sixth sub-par finish in eight events this season. Behind him, Naik’s even-par 216 tied for 22nd, giving U-M two players inside the top 25. Sophomore Dean Muratore was one-under through 36 holes, but a closing 75 dropped him to a tie for 29th at 218 (+2).

As the calendar turns to spring, the Wolverines will have nearly a month away from competition before returning for their final two tuneups in Big Ten country ahead of the postseason. First up, U-M travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Robert Kepler Collegiate on Saturday and Sunday, April 11-12, at the famed Scarlet Course.
