Three Finish in the Top-20 as Men’s Golf Team Ties for Sixth Place at the Folds of Honor Collegiate

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team posted the third-best team round of the day and had three finish among the top-20 as the Spartans tied for sixth place among 14 teams in the Folds of Honor Collegiate, played at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven.
Georgia Tech led from start to finish and topped the field at 30-under par 834 (272-284-278), five shots ahead of Notre Dame and Texas, who tied for second place at 25-under par 839. Cincinnati placed fourth at 22-under par 842 and Alabama rounded out the top-five teams at 20-under par 844.
Michigan State tied for sixth place with Ohio State at 15-under par 849.
The Spartans were in second place after the first round, fell to a tie for eighth after the second but bounced back with a 5-under par 283 on Wednesday to finish at 15-under par 849 (279-292-278).
Junior Julian Menser was the leader throughout for the Spartans and closed with a 3-under par 68 on Tuesday. It was his second 3-under par over three rounds and he tied for ninth place at 4-under par 209 (68-73-68), the second-best 54-hole score of his career.
Senior McCoy Biagioli posted his second round of 2-under par 69 over the three round on Tuesday to tied for 14th place at 2-under par 211 (69-73-69).
Senior Lorenzo Pinili paced Michigan State on Tuesday with the second-best round in the entire field, firing a 6-under par 65, the best round of his career and tied for the 5th-lowest 18-hole score in program history. He tied for 18th place at 1-under par 212 (71-76-65).
Senior Lucas Acevedo and sophomore Luke Mueller tied for 51st place with scores of 6-over par 222, respectively. Acevedo closed with a 6-over par 77 on Tuesday to finish his three-round total (74-71-77), while Mueller had a 5-over par 76 in the third round (71-75-76).
Playing as an individual, freshman Louis Goodman finished in 69th place at 16-over par 232 (80-78-74).
The Folds of Honor Collegiate, an idea created by MSU men’s golf Head Coach Casey Lubahn and Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, a former Kansas golfer who founded the Folds of Honor, was started five years ago as a men’s tournament and this is the second year with a women’s field. Since its inception in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded nearly 73,000 scholarships totaling more than $340 million to the children of US Military members and first responders fallen or wounded in the line of duty.
After back-to-back weekends to open the year, the Spartans are off until later this month when they travel to the Chicago area to play in the Windon Memorial (Monday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Sept. 29) at Onwentsia Club in LakeForest, Ill.
